On October 4, 1883, the first train journey to Constantinople crossed Europe all day and night from Paris Gare de l'Est to Bucharest. Passengers then took another train to Bulgaria and then a ship to their destination via the Black Sea and the Bosphorus. Direct access by train came in 1889.
